Last week, nine members of the Geography Department (students and faculty) attended the 9th Conference on Spatial Knowledge and Information Canada () in Banff, Alberta.  The conference brings together researchers of geographic information science (and systems), spatial data science, and related disciplines who live and work in Canada.  The conference was a blast and everyone is looking forward to SKI 2028.

How stepping into nature affects the brain

Spending time in nature, even briefly, triggers changes in the brain that calm stress, restore attention and quiet mental clutter, a new study has found.

Researchers at 91 and colleagues at Adolfo Ibáñez University in Chile have examined more than 100 brain-imaging studies from various disciplines. The result is one of the most comprehensive reviews to date of how the brain responds to nature.

He writes that a transformation of this scale will require Canadians to view defence as a permanent component of sovereignty, rather than a discretionary one.

Negotiations with AGSEM (Academic Casuals) – February 25, 2026

Since March 2025, the parties have held multiple bargaining sessions to negotiate a first collective agreement. Negotiations are progressing at a regular pace, with both sides engaged and exchanging proposals diligently. To date, the focus has been on non‑monetary topics, and the parties have reached agreement on the majority of the articles.

The union is expected to submit its monetary proposals at an upcoming meeting.

Future bargaining dates have already been scheduled for March and April as the parties continue their work toward a full agreement.

Negotiations with MUNACA – February 20, 2026

Since October 10, 2024, when discussions on the renewal of the collective agreement began, the parties have met thirty times and have maintained ongoing exchanges on a range of proposals.

On February 11, the employer’s representatives informed the union representatives that the employer was considering the possibility of seeking conciliation to help advance discussions. The union indicated that it would proceed with a request and submitted one to the Ministry of Labour the following day.
