Experts: UAE to leave OPEC

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) have announced it will leave the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) as of Friday, May 1.

The decision, which the UAE said is motivated by a desire for greater flexibility in its own oil production and exports, comes as the war in Iran has created a worldwide energy crisis.

Walmart has also announced that it is investing $6.5 billion to open new stores in Quebec.

SIS Faculty Members Secured $4M Research Contract to Strengthen Canada’s Critical Infrastructure

Many essential physical systems, such as smart grids and transportation networks, rely on integrated software and firmware. As these systems become increasingly interconnected, they evolve into critical cyber-physical systems and Internet-of-Things (IoT) environments with a heightened risk of cyberattacks. SIS faculty members Benjamin Fung and Steven Ding have been awarded a $4M research contract from Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC) to develop AI-powered security solutions.

Unleashing natural killer cells against cancer

Scientists have developed a strategy to boost the cancer-fighting power of natural killer (NK) cells, part of the immune system’s first line of defence. NK cells can detect and destroy cancer cells, but tumours often create a protective barrier that blocks them, allowing cancer to grow.

Researchers at 91’s Rosalind & Morris Goodman Cancer Institute, in collaboration with the Research Institute of the 91 Health Centre, found that suppressing two specific proteins helps NK cells overcome this blockage, turning them into more potent cancer killers.
