Towards a First Nation driven intervention: Promoting family wellness & preventing youth adoption of risky behaviours.

Structural components:

  1. Regional Health Centre-based intervention: In Phase 3, the coordination of the program delivery will be transferred from a university-based coordination to a regional indigenous Health Centre whose mandate is to deliver culturally relevant health services. Each regional Centre will organise a yearly training for facilitators and also a post-program delivery regional evaluation. In Year 1, both of these latter tasks are viewed as a joint-responsibility (associated researcher and regional coordinator); but the Health Centre coordinators will autonomously provide it after the initial mentorship year. The last task is to ensure the viability of the 'Vision for Sustainability' committee.
  2. School-based reinforcement of the intervention: The Regional Health Centre could offer an in-class ONE-DAY program ($1600 including a traditional lunch) or a ONE-HOUR Activity ($100) to 4 or 5th graders. School and School Boards would pay for tailored services that could be delivered by the program's facilitators, elders or guest speakers.
  3. Evidence-based two-eye national evaluation: Although the program stems from an evidence-based program (SFP), yearly a National review committee will insure the effectiveness of the culturally adapted intervention by evaluating the content of the program in relation to the comments made in each regional First Nation yearly Report. The selected reviewers will be formed by:
    1. Champions facilitators, elders or coordinator from each First Nation,
    2. Associated researchers who had participated to the yearly regional focus group-Talking Circle evaluation,
    3. Child-parent bonding university and First Nation external experts.

Evaluation/Knowledge-Exchange Cycle:

  1. July 2015: To improve the Manual, each session goals would be discussed and new cultural items that were added in the previous year in each cultural version would be taken into account.
  2. September 2015: Training of facilitators guided by knowledge learned in Phase 2 and during the discussion in July.
  3. April-May 2016: Focus Group/Talking Circle Hybrid Evaluation assessing delivery process and program’s outcomes. A 5-page Team Report will be produced and easily available.
  4. July or August 2016: Evidence-based two-eye national evaluation that would review each cultural group Team Report and discuss possible improvement for the next delivery.
  5. September 2016: Training of facilitators guided by knowledge learned in 2015-16
