Honours and Joint Honours

Honours (57 credits) or Joint Honours (36 credits) in International Development Studies

Building on the foundation of the Major Concentration in International Development Studies, the Honours or the Joint Honours programs in IDS offer students the opportunity to deepen their understanding of global development issues while developing advanced research and analytical skills. Students explore topics such as economic development, governance, inequality, sustainability, migration, health, conflict, and international cooperation through advanced coursework and specialized methodological training.

The Honours programs culminate in the Honours Seminar, where students engage in independent research and examine a contemporary development issue.

The Joint Honours program combines International Development Studies with another discipline—such as Economics, Political Science, Sociology, Geography, Anthropology, Environmental Studies, or related fields—allowing students to integrate complementary perspectives and methodologies while pursuing advanced study in both areas.

Why Choose Honours or Joint Honours?

Honours-level study provides excellent preparation for graduate and professional programs and allows students to strengthen their academic and professional profiles through:

  • Advanced training in research design, methodology, and analysis
  • Enhanced skills in critical thinking, writing, and policy analysis
  • Opportunities to engage more deeply with contemporary development debates and research
  • Strong preparation for graduate studies in development studies, public policy, international affairs, economics, political science, sociology, geography, and related fields
  • A competitive advantage for careers in research, policy, government, international organizations, NGOs, and the non-profit sector

Students considering graduate school are strongly encouraged to explore the Honours or Joint Honours options.
