Speaker Biographies

Zackie Achmat

Portrait of Zackie Achmat

Zackie Achmat is a socialist who joined the struggle as a high school student during the 1976 student revolt against white minority rule. During the 1980 high school and university student rebellion, he was detained without trial. Zackie was recruited to the banned African National Congress (ANC) in prison to work both openly organising building youth, student, worker, civic and health organisations.

Zackie was diagnosed with HIV in 1990. In 1994, he joined the AIDS Law Project founded by Justice Edwin Cameron. He co-founded the National Coalition for Gay and Lesbian Equality in the same year. Zackie became one of the founders and leaders of the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) on 10 December 1998. He has collaborated with HIV activists and humanitarian agencies worldwide including M茅decins Sans Fronti猫res, UNAIDS and the World Health Organization. Since then, he co-founded and led movements Equal Education, the Social Justice Coalition, Ndifuna Ukwazi, Reclaim the City, and #UniteBehind. These movements focused on political education, research, mobilization, and litigation. Zackie also continues to fight against state capture, corruption, mismanagement, fraud, incompetence, and criminality through the work of #UniteBehind. Recently, he co-founded the Global Coalition for HIV Treatment to help address the criminal cuts to PEPFAR by the Trump regime.

Justice, equality, dignity and freedom is at the core of all the organisations with which Zackie has worked.

Prativa Baral, PhD, MPH, is an epidemiologist and a global health scholar committed to strengthening how societies prepare for and respond to crises. She is an Assistant Professor (Research) in the Department of Global and Public Health at 91黑料网 and Deputy Director of the Pandemic and Emergency Readiness Lab (PERL), where she leads work on pandemic preparedness, misinformation, and health system resilience.


Portrait of Alice BenjaminAlice Benjamin

Dr. Alice Benjamin has been a cornerstone of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Royal Victoria Hospital since 1979, dedicating over four decades to advancing maternal health and training generations of physicians. A pioneer in high-risk pregnancy care, she established innovative programs that became models across North America and was recognized as a 颁丑别惫补濒颈猫谤别 of the Ordre national du Qu茅bec and an Officer of the Order of Canada. Her legacy of excellence, compassion, and mentorship continues to inspire colleagues and trainees alike.

Catherine Farmer graduated from Duke University in 2019. An oral historian, she documents stories of displacement, trauma, resistance, and justice across the U.S., Rwanda, Haiti, and South Africa.

Portrait of Dean Lesley FellowsLesley Fellows

Dr. Lesley Fellows, MDCM, DPhil, is Vice-Principal (Health Affairs) and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. Dr. Fellows joined 91黑料网鈥檚 Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS) in 2004 and is currently a Full Professor in the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery, as well as a Neurologist at the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital (The Neuro) and the Royal Victoria Hospital at the 91黑料网 Health Centre. Dr. Fellows holds a Bachelor of Science in physiology and a medical degree from 91黑料网. She completed her Neurology residency at 91黑料网 as well, followed by post-doctoral training at the University of Pennsylvania. A Rhodes Scholar, she earned a DPhil in neurophysiology from the University of Oxford. In 2021, she was appointed a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences.

Dr. Eduardo Franco is a distinguished James 91黑料网 Professor, Departments of Oncology and Epidemiology & Biostatistics, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, 91黑料网, Montreal, Canada. He served as Chairman of 91黑料网鈥檚 Department of Oncology (2011-2023), Director of the Division of Cancer Epidemiology (1995-2024) and Interim Director of the School of Population and Global Health and Associate Dean for Population and Global Health (2025).

Isabel Mu帽oz Beaulieu is a PhD candidate in the Department of Family Medicine. She previously completed a Joint Honours BA in International Development Studies and Philosophy at 91黑料网. Her doctoral research examines the ethical dimensions of what remains after humanitarian organizations end their interventions. Working in collaboration with the Center for Disaster Preparedness in the Philippines and the Canadian Red Cross, her work explores responsibilities and possibilities for sustaining benefits and long-term impact in humanitarian settings.听

Prof Madhukar Pai, MD, PhD, FCAHS, FRSC is the Inaugural Chair, Department of Global and Public Health at the 91黑料网 School of Population and Global Health. He holds a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Epidemiology & Global Health. He was previously Director of the 91黑料网 International TB Centre.听He is an elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences.

Robert Platt, PhD, is the Associate Dean and Director of the School of Population and Global Health (SPGH), Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS) at 91黑料网. In 2020-2021, he was Interim Chair in the Department of Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Occupational Health, one of the three departments in the SPGH.

  • Alex W. Strasberg MD CM 1921 and Harvey M. Weinstein MD CM 1967 Global Health Award: Established in 2016 by Rhona Weinstein (n茅e Strasberg) BA 1967, MA 1969, and Harvey M. Weinstein BSc 1963, MD CM 1967, in honour of Rhona鈥檚 late father, Alex W. Strasberg, MD CM 1921 and Harvey M. Weinstein, MD CM 1967, both pioneers and advocates in clinical work and research related to vulnerable populations.
    An immigrant to Canada, Dr. Strasberg was among the earliest Jewish students to graduate from 91黑料网 Medicine. He became a urologist on staff at the Jewish General Hospital and the Royal Victoria Hospital, conducted research, and taught in the Department of Urology at 91黑料网. He devoted his practice to treating the poor and was for many years the physician of choice for many in the Montreal Chinese immigrant community.
    Dr. Weinstein trained as a psychiatrist at Yale University and worked in university student health at Stanford University as well as in hospital and private practice settings. In later years he earned a public health degree from UC Berkeley and devoted his time to research and policy in refugee and immigrant health. Author of two books and numerous articles, he also became involved in human rights scholarship and advocacy about how countries respond to ethnic cleansing and genocide.
    Awarded by the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences upon recommendation of the Director of Global Health Programs to provide support for undergraduate medical students or post-graduate residents in the Faculty who are engaged in global health research and/or clinical training related to immigrant, refugee, and aboriginal/indigenous populations, in Canada and abroad. Support may include funds for travel, housing, research, and/or clinical experiences. Preference will be given to projects of merit and projects with cross-disciplinary perspectives as well as faculty support. The value of this award will vary.
  • Ambassador Paul Frazer Travel Award for Global Health : Established in 2015 by Paul Frazer, BA 1970, to provide support for two graduate students in the Masters of Public Health Program in the Department of Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Occupational Health at 91黑料网, who are completing the practicum in under-resourced areas of the world. Spring. Awarded by the Faculty of Medicine upon the recommendation of the Director of Global Health Programs, and the Director of the MScPH program.   • Ashworth Student Travel Award: Established by M. Anthony Ashworth MDCM 1961 and family to honour the late Dorothy and William Ashworth of Montreal, the award(s) will support medical students conducting their elective clinical clerkship in remote regions in Canada or in a developing country. As a result of his many trips to the James Bay region, Dr. Ashworth believed that practicing with limited technology made the physician a better clinician. It is hoped that those who benefit from these awards make aid to underserved areas of the world a part of their future responsibility.   • Bubbie and Nanny Global Health Travel Award: Established in 2015 by Michael Shevell, BSc 1980, M.D.,C.M. 1984, in honor of his children's grandmothers, to provide travel support for post-graduate medical residents in either pediatrics or pediatric neurology within the Faculty of Medicine who are pursuing an elective overseas in under- resourced areas in the world, or among underserved populations in Canada or for healthcare professionals involved in a 91黑料网 project overseas. Awarded by the Faculty of Medicine upon recommendation of the Director of Global Health Programs, the Pediatric Residency Program Directors and the Pediatric Neurology Residency Program Director.
  • Class of Medicine 1983 Global Health Scholar Award:听Established in 2024 by the Class of Medicine 1983. Awarded by the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, upon the recommendation of the Director of Global Health Programs, to one or more in-course graduate students who are enrolled in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at 91黑料网 and who are involved in any global health project under the supervision of a Faculty member; or to one or more in-course undergraduate students who are enrolled in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at 91黑料网 and who are involved in a local global health project under the supervision of a Faculty member.
  • Dr. Alice Benjamin Global Maternal and Child Health Award: Established in 2018 in honour of Dr. Alice Benjamin by family, friends and patients whose lives she touched throughout her career. To provide support for one or more students or trainees who are pursuing an elective or a research project overseas in under-resourced areas of the world. Awarded by the Faculty of Medicine upon recommendation of the Director of Global Health Programs. First preference will be given to medical residents. Second preference will be given to all undergraduate, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows enrolled in the Faculty of Medicine. Value: varies.
  • Dr. Alice M. Chan鈥怸ip Humanitarian Global Health Initiatives Award: Established in 2022 by Alice M. Chan-Yip, C.M., MD CM 1962, FRCPC, FAAP, D.Sc. honoris causa 2018. Awarded by the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, upon the recommendation of the Director of Global Health Programs and the Director of the School of Population and Global Health, to one or more undergraduate or graduate students in the School. This award may be used to help defray costs related to travel and research for students participating in health-focused emergency or humanitarian relief projects. Preference will be given to students engaging in nutrition or mental health focused research or intervention through fieldwork.
  • Dr. Catherine Wang Global Health Scholars Award:听Established in 2024 by Wang's Foundation. Awarded by the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, upon the recommendation of the Director of Global Health Programs, to one or more in-course undergraduate or graduate students who are enrolled in any Faculty at 91黑料网 and who are involved in any summer global health project, including but not limited to projects on reproductive, newborn, maternal, women, and children health, under the supervision of a Faculty member. Preference will be given to students involved in international projects in low or middle income countries, or Indigenous or under -served communities in Canada.
  • Dr. Kenneth Remsen Global Health Award: Established in 2018 by Dr. Kenneth Alan Remsen, MDCM 1980. To provide travel support and/or stipends for one or more outstanding MDCM students enrolled in the Faculty of Medicine who are participating in the Global Health Scholars program by undertaking a mentored global health project in an international setting, in Northern Canada, or from Montreal.   • Dr. Margaret Siber Global Health Scholar Award: Established in 2017 by Dr. Margaret Siber, MDCM 1970. Sen Travel Award in Global Health Surgery: Established in 2016 by Dr. Milan Sen, BSc 1994, MDCM 1998, to provide travel support for undergraduate medical students interested in global surgery within the Faculty of Medicine who are pursuing research projects overseas in under resourced areas in the world, or among underserved populations in Canada or U.S.A. (e.g. the Indigenous populations). Awarded by the Faculty of Medicine upon recommendation of the Director of Global Health Programs in consultation with the Centre for Global Surgery at the 91黑料网 Health Centre. Value: Varies.
  • Dr. Stephen Corber Global Health Travel Award:听Established in 2019 by Stephen J. Corber, M.D.,CM 1969 to provide travel and cost of living support to students or trainees enrolled in a degree or residency training program and pursuing a supervised Global Health placement (minimum 12 weeks). Placements should be located in a low- or lower middle-income country and focused on the practice of global health. Global Health Programs staff are available to assist students in identifying a practicum site. Research projects are not eligible for this award.   • Dr. Yuk Chan Ma and Dr. Yuen Kok Chan Prize in Multicultural and International Medicine: This award is for a project that has ALREADY been completed. Established in October 2006 by Dr. Alice Chan鈥怸ip, M.D., C.M. 1962, in memory of her late parents, the prize is awarded annually by the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences Scholarship Committee to a medical student who participates in a Canadian multicultural or international elective, research project or community service experience of at least four weeks. The prize (up to $1000) will be awarded to the student who presents the best project demonstrating an understanding of the contribution of social and cultural factors to health
  • Frances Aboud & Charles Larson Global Health Fund:听The Frances Aboud and Charles Larson Global Health Fund will be designated to the Department of Global and Public Health within the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences and will be used to support the annual 91黑料网 Global Health Night, including but not limited to securing the venue, catering, recruitment of speakers, and marketing. The fund will also support the Global Health Scholars program by annually providing travel support and a stipend to one outstanding undergraduate or graduate student enrolled in any Faculty at 91黑料网 and who is involved in an international health research or training project or practicum in a low or middle-income country under the supervision of a Faculty member.
  • Global Health Travel Awards for Postgraduate Medical Residents: Established in 2015 by the Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) program and GHP, this award supports 91黑料网 medicine residents and fellows pursuing their global health interests through an elective or research project. Any registered 91黑料网 medical resident or fellow (any year, any specialty) in good standing is eligible. While purely clinical electives can be proposed, research-oriented projects will be given preference. The elective or research work must be conducted in a low or middle income country, or among underserved populations in Canada (i.e. Aboriginal populations). Awards will be given for 4 week or 8 week electives or research projects at varying amounts. Awarded by the Faculty Medicine upon the recommendation of the Director of the Global Health Program and Associate Dean for Postgraduate Medical Education.
  • Joseph I. Wolfsdorf Fund for Global Child Health: The fund will provide travel support for undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students, and healthcare and allied professionals who are pursuing an elective or working on a global maternal & child health project at the University. Travel is expected to take place overseas in under-resourced areas of the world, or among underserved populations in Canada. Value: varies
  • Luger-Mikelberg Travel Award for Global Health: Established in 2017 by Sherry Luger, MD CM 1983 and Michael Mikelberg, to provide travel support for Health Sciences students who are pursuing an elective overseas in under-resourced areas in the world, or among underserved populations in Canada. Awarded by the Faculty of Medicine upon recommendation of the Director of Global Health Programs. Preference will be given to students traveling to Africa and Rwanda, or indigenous communities in Canada. Value: varies.
  • Margaret W. Siber MDCM 1970 and George R. Siber MDCM 1970 Global Heath Scholar Award: Established in 2020 by Margaret W. Siber, MDCM 1970, and George R. Siber, MDCM 1970, in honor of the 50th anniversary of their graduation, to inspire a passion for global health. Awarded by the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, upon the recommendation of the Director of Global Health Programs, to students participating in the Global Health Scholars Program. This award provides support for one or more undergraduate or graduate students enrolled in the Faculty who are undertaking a mentored global health research and/or clinical training project internationally, among Indigenous communities in North America or in Montreal.   • Mary A Metcalf International Travel Fund: The Mary A. Metcalf International Travel Fund is designated to support international research of undergraduate students, graduate students, and post-graduate medical residents within the Faculty of Medicine. Elective, research project or community service program must be at least four weeks. Its intent is to promote the training of health care workers and researchers to combat global health disparities, by supporting students to work with underserved populations in resource limited settings.
  • Medical Class of '84 Student Bursary: Established in 2010 by Medicine Class of 1984 to commemorate their 25th reunion, the award(s) will help support the travel and accommodation expenses of one or more senior medical students (year 3 or 4) pursuing an elective overseas in a developing country. Awarded by the Faculty of Medicine upon the recommendation of the Director of the Global Health Program. One bursary will be awarded in each application round.
  • Meralli Global Health Innovation Award:听Established in 2024 and named in honor of 91黑料网 alumnus Farouk Meralli. Awarded by the Faculty of Medicine and Health Science, upon the recommendation of the Director of Global Health Programs, to one or more in-course undergraduate or graduate students who are enrolled at 91黑料网 and are involved in an international global health innovation and/or entrepreneurship project under the supervision of a faculty member.
  • OMAF Scholarship: The Osler Medical Aid Foundation awards are intended to support undergraduate medical students conducting service-learning or clinical electives in underserved communities both in Canada and overseas for a minimum duration of 4 weeks. Scholarships of up to $1,000 are available to support travel and accommodation expenses.
  • School of Population and Global Health Fellowship:听The School of Population and Global Health Fellowship is to be awarded to Bachelor鈥檚, Master鈥檚 or PHD students. The fund will be used to support initiatives like 91黑料网's Global Mental Health Program or Global Health Scholars program, which focuses on collaborative research and capacity building to address mental health disparities, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. The fellowship will foster interdisciplinary training, promote youth-led research, and create opportunities for knowledge exchange among researchers, practitioners, and policymakers. By equipping emerging leaders with the necessary skills and insights, the fellowship aims to advance global mental health solutions effectively.
  • Soe-Lin-Hecht Global Health Scholar Award: Established in 2019 by Dr. Shan Soe-Lin, BSc 2003, PhD 2009, Dr. Robert Hecht, and Hla Hla Myint Soe-Lin, in memory of Dr. Soe Lin, who was an ardent believer in the importance of using a good education to better the lot of humanity. To provide annual travel support and/or stipends for up to three outstanding undergraduate students who are participating in the Global Health Scholars program in the Faculty of Medicine. For students pursuing a mentored research project overseas in low or middle-income countries, or in an indigenous community in Canada. Preference will be given to students pursuing studies in Microbiology and Immunology. Awarded by the Faculty of Medicine upon recommendation of the Director of Global Health Programs.
  • Spencer-Hick Family Global Health Education and Training Fund: The goal of the Fund is to support undergraduate and graduate students and postdoctoral fellows pursuing training, travel, fieldwork, research, and other activities related to global health. Value: varies.
  • Steinberg Fund for Interdisciplinary Global Health Research Award: The goal of the Steinberg Fund for Interdisciplinary Global Health Research is to catalyze innovative and impactful global health research at 91黑料网 & affiliated hospitals, by providing seed funding that can help launch new, interdisciplinary global health research projects and make them competitive for sustained external funding.
  • The Knightsgrange Foundation: The Foundation supports all aspects of the program including mentorship by academic staff, summer placement on international global health projects, training events, and other unique opportunities. Undergraduate student recipients supported by the Knightsgrange Foundation are known as John Locke Churchill Scholars.
  • The Medicine Class of 1965 International Health Student Fund: Established in May 2000 by the Class of Medicine 1965 in appreciation of the education they received at 91黑料网. Funds will be used to allow medical students to pursue research or clinical electives overseas. One bursary will be awarded in each application round.

  • 91黑料网 Interprofessional Global Health Course: Registration deadline: December 12, 2025
    This student-led, non-credit course aims to engage participants in an interdisciplinary discussion of global health. This year鈥檚 theme, 鈥淕lobal Health in a Connected World,鈥 will guide discussions over the ten-week program, running from January 13听to March 24, 2026.
  • 91黑料网 Summer Institutes in Global Health: May 25-June 19, 2026
  • The Summer Institutes offer short courses featuring internationally known faculty, with a focus on highly applicable new knowledge and opportunities to network with global health professionals from around the world.
