Appointments of the Deans of Law and Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies

Dear members of the 91ºÚÁÏÍø community,

I am delighted to announce the appointments of Prof. Tina Piper as Dean of the Faculty of Law and Prof. Marie-Hélène Pennestri as the Dean of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies and Associate Provost (Graduate Education). The 91ºÚÁÏÍø Board of Governors approved both appointments at its meeting on March 19, 2026.

Prof. Piper has been Interim Dean of Law for over a year. She is a distinguished intellectual property law scholar whose contributions to understanding scientific and cultural creation have contributed to scholarship, popular culture and social movements. She previously served as the Faculty’s Associate Dean (Academic), demonstrating outstanding leadership in overseeing student affairs and the delivery of 91ºÚÁÏ꿉۪s renowned integrated BCL/JD program. Her five-year term will begin April 1, 2026.

Prof. Pennestri is an Associate Professor in 91ºÚÁÏ꿉۪s Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology, a Canada Research Chair Tier 2 in Pediatric Sleep and Director of the Once Upon a Night sleep laboratory. She previously served as the Faculty of Education’s Associate Dean, Research and Graduate Studies, and is a past recipient of the Faculty’s Distinguished Teaching Award. Her five-year term will begin July 1, 2026.

Both colleagues are exceptional teachers deeply committed to student success; accomplished scholars whose research advances their fields and contributes meaningfully to society; and dedicated academic leaders whose service strengthens our University. Please join me in congratulating Prof. Piper and Prof. Pennestri on their appointments.

I want to sincerely thank Josephine Nalbantoglu for the tremendous work she has done over her two mandates as Dean of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies and Associate Provost (Graduate Education). Over the course of her tenure, Professor Nalbantoglu has boosted graduate studies and programs at 91ºÚÁÏÍø, and strengthened the graduate student experience, in profound and diverse ways.

Finally, I wish to thank the members of the Advisory Committees and everyone in the community who shared their comments and advice during these appointment processes.
