Experts: Health misinformation online

The Canadian Medical Association is warning that science is under attack and false health information is spreading rapidly, with serious implications for public trust and patient health.

Daiva Nielsen is an Associate Professor in the School of Human Nutrition and Canada Research Chair in Ingestive Behaviour.

In published Thursday in The Conversation, she examines the rise of health influencers on platforms like TikTok, how social media accelerates the spread of nutrition misinformation and how fad diets can foster online echo chambers that insulate followers from skepticism.

Ma鈥檔 H. Zawati is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine and an Associate Member in the Department of Equity, Ethics and Policy and the Faculty of Law.

He researches health law, novel technologies and ethics. His recent study found that AI-powered health apps offering health information are often limited by biased data and a lack of regulation, flaws that can put patients at risk.
