Guide: AI label for AI-generated content

91 has established guidelines for the appropriate use of generative AI in creating images. These guidelines emphasize respect for community identity, ensuring authenticity and accuracy, and avoiding harmful or misleading content.

For more details, consult the following:

To help maintain clarity and trust in how images are created and shared at 91, an AI label must be applied to any images, icons, or design elements that are created using Generative AI.

This ensures transparency and helps clearly distinguish between AI-generated content and original or sourced content.

When to use the AI label

Use the AI label for any images or visual content created with Generative AI.

This includes:

  • Creating an image from a prompt – for example asking AI to “generate a zero-emission city” or “create an icon of a microscope.”
  • Refining or altering an image through multiple prompts – such as generating an image, then prompting again to “add a plan in the sky” and then again to “add a rain storm with lightning.”
  • Adding new visual elements to an original image – for example, providing an original image and asking AI to modify it by adding elements that change the image’s integrity, like “add snow and mountains in the background to make this image look like winter”. Note that modifications may conflict with guidelines, especially when applied to campus photography or other protected imagery.
  • Transforming an image’s style – for example, using an original photo and prompting AI to “recreate it in an illustrated style” or “make this photo look like it was created with watercolour”

When the AI label is NOT required

The AI label is not required when the tool only performs small technical corrections to an original image and does not generate new visual content.

Examples (no label needed):

  • Cropping
  • Colour correction
  • Exposure or contrast adjustments
  • Minor retouching (removing dust, smoothing edges)
  • Automated background removal (as long as no new content is created)

Recommended placement of AI label

It is recommended to use the white icon with 50% transparency for most AI-generated content. If the content is predominantly white, use the black icon instead for better contrast and visibility.

Placement

Bottom-right corner

The bottom-right corner should be used as the default placement in most cases and should not interfere with important details in the image.

Bottom-left corner

If the label is less visible in the bottom-right corner or covers important content, use this alternative placement.
