Advancing Indigenous Knowledge and Education Initiative

The听Advancing Indigenous Knowledge and Education Initiative (AIKEI)听aims to celebrate and听facilitate听the respectful inclusion of Indigenous knowledge across 91黑料网. The initiative engages members of the 91黑料网 community in meaningful and sustained connections with Indigenous perspectives, values, and worldviews.听

Through two dedicated funding streams, the initiative supports:听

  • Indigenous visitors and events that听center听Indigenous voices and knowledges, and听

  • Indigenous students in accessing conferences, workshops, and learning opportunities that strengthen their academic and professional pathways.听

This initiative reflects 91黑料网鈥檚 commitments to Truth and Reconciliation and to supporting Indigenous students, communities, and knowledge systems.听

Funding Streams听

Stream A: Visitors / Events听

听

For 91黑料网 faculty听and听staff听

Stream A supports the costs of inviting Indigenous visitors (inclusive of Elders, academics, cultural knowledge holders, and artists) or hosting events that promote Indigenous听voices and perspectives.听

听

Visitor听(up to听$2,000)听听

For those interested in:听听

Event (up to $3,500)听听

For those interested in:听听

  • Inviting an Indigenous academic/artist to present their research/art听听

  • Inviting an Indigenous person to provide specific training to faculty, staff, or students in the department听听

  • Inviting an Indigenous community leader to share their perspective with faculty, staff, or students听

  • Coordinating small or medium-sized events within their department, school, or institute that engage members of the 91黑料网 community, including students, faculty, staff, and community partners.听听

  • Must meaningfully centre Indigenous voices, knowledge, and/or perspectives, with clear involvement of Indigenous individuals (e.g., Elders, knowledge keepers, scholars, artists, community leaders).听

  • Should contribute to learning, dialogue, or capacity-building related to Indigenous histories, cultures, or contemporary issues.听

  • These events can be organized at 91黑料网 or in the community.听听

Funding Available听

  • Visitor: up to听$2,000听

  • Event: up to听$3,500听

听

Application Deadlines听

  • August 1 DEADLINE鈫� for听厂别辫迟别尘产别谤鈥揇别肠别尘产别谤听(fall)听

  • Applicant to be notified no later than August 31st听听

  • November 1听DEADLINE鈫� for听January鈥揂pril听(winter)听

  • Applicant to be notified no later than December 18th听

听

Eligible Expenses

Eligible expenses include:

  • Speaker or visitor honoraria

  • Travel and accommodations

  • Space booking fees

  • Parking for Indigenous invited guests

Expenses NOT eligible for funding include:

  • Catering

  • Purchase of equipment

  • Research鈥憆elated costs

听

Stream A: Terms of Conditions

  • Individuals/groups may only receive funding once per academic year.听听

  • Applicants听must听use听all听application forms and templates听developed by the Office of Indigenous Initiatives听to听apply听and report. (all听attached)听

  • Event organizers must ensure that accessibility needs for people with disabilities are met.听

  • A听reporting template (supplied)听of all revenues and expenses听must听be听submitted听to the Office of Indigenous Initiatives听at听aikei.oii [at] mcgill.ca听within听45 days听after the visitor/event听along with a list of activities.听Save all receipts听and听attach听to the reporting template when听submitted.听Please be aware that any unused portions from the grant will be returned to the Indigenous Education Fund.听听听

  • Successful applicants will听be responsible for听all organization and event planning.听

  • Applications will not be considered for expenses already incurred.听

听

Stream A: How to Apply

Applications must be submitted using the official application forms and templates developed by the Office of Indigenous Initiatives.

Please note:

  • Applicants may receive funding once per academic year

  • Applications will not be considered for expenses incurred prior to approval (with limited exceptions for Stream B conference application fees)

  2. Complete the MS Formswith the required information and attach the completed funding proposal before one of the deadlines.

Stream B: Indigenous Student Support听

For Indigenous students enrolled听full鈥憈ime听at 91黑料网听

Stream B provides听supporting the costs of Indigenous undergraduate and graduate students wishing to听participate听in conferences, events, and workshops that enhance their learning and research, particularly in relation to Indigenous communities, perspectives, and issues.

Examples include:听听

  • Indigenous speaker series/panels听

  • Indigenous Awareness Weeks (IAW) events听

  • Indigenous Youth Conferences听

  • Indigenous Education Conferences听

  • Indigenous youth/student-focused Workshops & Summits听

听

Funding Available听

  • Travel听support听up to听$3,000听

听

Eligible Expenses

Eligible expenses include:

  • Travel to and from event and accommodations

  • Conference or workshop registration fees

  • Required association or membership fees related to registration

Expenses NOT eligible for funding include:

  • Purchase of equipment

  • Food or incidental travel costs

听

  • Applicant to be notified no later than August 31st听听

  • Applicants听who are听presenting/participating听in a听conference/workshop听must听provide proof of听their acceptance/registration.听

  • Examples of听possible events:听Indigenous听speaker series/panels, Indigenous Awareness Weeks听(IAW)听events, Indigenous Youth Conferences, Indigenous Education Conferences, Indigenous youth/student-focused Workshops &Summits.听

  • A reporting template (supplied)听of all revenues and expenses听must听be听submitted听to the Office of Indigenous Initiatives at听aikei.oii [at] mcgill.ca听within听45 days听after the visitor/event听along with a list of听activities. Reporting & Accountability听

All successful applicants听are听required听to听submit听a听post鈥慳ctivity听report听within听45 days听of the event or travel completion.听

Reports must include:听

  • A summary of activities听

  • A financial report of all revenues and expenses听

  • All receipts听pertaining to听revenues and expenses听

Any unused funds must be returned to the听Advancing Indigenous Knowledge and Education Initiative (AIKEI).听

听

Accessibility & Respect听

Event organizers听are responsible for听ensuring accessibility for people with disabilities. Applicants are encouraged to contact the Office of Indigenous Initiatives early if accommodations or guidance are needed.听

All activities supported through this initiative are expected to engage Indigenous peoples, knowledge, and communities with respect, care, and accountability.听
