Gen Z and younger millennials want their work to have meaning and impact, and are determined to be their authentic selves at work. This is a bit of a departure from the work-life split preferred by their predecessors, but it is not the first time that generation gaps have affected workplace culture. To understand how these gaps can be bridged 鈥 and propose some techniques to do it -- Prof. Karl Moore conducted interviews with workers from younger and older generations.

Office workers adopted remote work on a massive scale during the pandemic, and many of them only want to return to the office on a limited basis. This was a major issue in the spring 2023 strike by the Public Service Alliance of Canada. In the union鈥檚 new contract, remote work requests will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. This makes an amount of sense, according to Desautels Prof. Jean-Nicolas Reyt. "Some jobs do require you to be on-site, but at the end of the day, it has to be case-by-case," Reyt told CBC News.

To understand the impact of the climate crisis on younger generations, empathy is a place to start. It is a necessary part of confronting, but on its own, it is not enough. Desautels lecturer Anita Nowak (BA'97, BCom'97, PhD'11) recently published her book聽Purposeful Empathy, which is described as聽an inspiring and powerful read by Quebec MNA D茅sir茅e McGraw in a review for Policy Magazine. 鈥淭his is a book that helps middle-aged people like me understand, collaborate and ultimately innovate with the next generation of Millennials and Gen Z,鈥 McGraw says.

The union representing WestJet pilots has voted in favour of a job action, and that leaves air passengers playing a guessing game. The pilots can鈥檛 strike until May 16 at the earliest, and for those who already hold tickets with the airline, it鈥檚 a 鈥榳ait and see鈥 situation鈥, said Prof. Karl Moore to CityNews Vancouver. A vote in favour of a job action is sometimes just a negotiating tactic, but the possibility could push more travellers toward Air Canada.
