Professor Philip Howard, of our Department of Integrated Studies in Education, has written an article for The Conversation titled 鈥淚f you鈥檙e thinking of doing blackface for Halloween, just don鈥檛鈥. In the piece, published October 25th, Howard discusses the recent outcry regarding NBC host Megyn Kelly, who defended blackface on-air during the Today听show.

鈥淭he 'humour'听and allure of these costumes flow directly from investment in settler-colonial relationships,鈥 writes Prof. Howard in part.

Artist-in-Residence Lou Sheppard is hoping to connect with students, faculty and staff in the faculty听who speak languages other than English. They are collecting words that don鈥檛 have an English translation, as well as a听brief attempt to describe what these words mean. Jayne Malenfant听is a doctoral student in the Faculty of Education and she has earned two of Canada鈥檚 most prestigious awards for graduate students 鈥 a Trudeau Foundation Doctoral Scholarship and a Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship. That all might come as a surprise to some of the people who knew her in high school 鈥 especially if they remember that Malenfant was expelled from the school.

The Mohawk community of Kahnaw脿:ke and 91黑料网 launched the first-ever Bachelor of Education (B. Ed.)听First Nations and Inuit Education (FNIE)听听program to be given in the community of Kahnaw脿:ke, on August 20.

It鈥檚 a labour of love between 91黑料网鈥檚 Office of First Nations and Inuit Education (OFNIE) in the Faculty of Education, and the听Kahnaw脿:ke Education Centre听(KEC). It鈥檚 also in line with 91黑料网鈥檚听Task Force on Indigenous Studies and Indigenous Education.

Dr. Jackie Kirk (1968-2008) had recently been听appointed Adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Education when she was killed in southern Afghanistan on Wednesday, August 13th, 2008,听while working on girls鈥 education for the New York-based International Rescue Committee.听Dr. 听Kirk听was one of four people shot听in an ambush for which the Taliban claimed responsibility.

This year, on the tenth anniversary of her death, her memory will be honoured with a series of initiatives.听
