Please join us for the third lecture of The LOLA Series: Lectures on Language Acquisition, for parents, clinicians and educators, featuring Dr. Roy Lyster of 91's Department of Integrated Studies in Education.

Abstract:

Teaching in an immersion program brings with it some specific challenges, such as how to teach content like science or geography and focus on language at the same time. “We understand now that it’s actually very difficult to do,” says Dr Roy Lyster, a Professor in the Department of Integrated Studies in Education at 91. While many teachers do resort to separating language teaching from content teaching, the research shows that it’s more effective for language learners if the two are integrated. Lyster has been studying the different ways that teachers can and do manage to integrate lessons. “One of the things I have been looking at is how teachers interact with students while they are presenting their lessons,” he says. “Specifically how they provide corrective feedback to students so that while the students are talking about content, teachers are still able to give them information about language that doesn’t necessarily interrupt the flow.” Dr Lyster’s lecture will present some of his research findings and try to answer some of the questions parents and teachers may have about bilingual education. “Ideas are evolving about how language can be taught through content,” says Lyster. “Education is a field where we always have to look at making it better.”
