Chancellor Day Hall 3644 rue Peel, Montreal, QC, H3A 1W9, CA

Since 9/11 Western democracies have responded to terrorism threats with varying degrees of effectiveness and compliance with human rights standards. Canada is among the many countries faced with the challenge of balancing Charter rights with effective stringent anti-terrorism protections.  The Symposium on Counter-Terrorism and Civil Liberties gathers leading policy makers, lawyers, academics, emerging scholars and students to engage in the ongoing public policy debates improving our response to the current environment.

Recent jurisprudential developments in counterterrorism cases and legislative initiatives suggest our country is at a crossroads when it comes to determining how to correct current shortcomings. We believe it is a timely occasion to critically revisit the tenets behind counterterrorism action and, most importantly, create an interdisciplinary forum for scholars, jurists, politicians and members of the civil society of different political allegiance to exchange on the future of those decisions taken in our name.
