DESCRIPTION:Since 9/11 Western democracies have responded to terrorism\nthr
 eats with varying degrees of effectiveness and compliance with\nhuman righ
 ts standards. Canada is among the many countries faced\nwith the challenge
  of balancing Charter rights with effective\nstringent anti-terrorism prot
 ections.  The Symposium on\nCounter-Terrorism and Civil Liberties gathers 
 leading policy\nmakers\, lawyers\, academics\, emerging scholars and stude
 nts to\nengage in the ongoing public policy debates improving our response
 \nto the current environment.\n\nRecent jurisprudential developments in co
 unterterrorism cases and\nlegislative initiatives suggest our country is a
 t a crossroads when\nit comes to determining how to correct current shortc
 omings. We\nbelieve it is a timely occasion to critically revisit the tene
 ts\nbehind counterterrorism action and\, most importantly\, create an\nint
 erdisciplinary forum for scholars\, jurists\, politicians and\nmembers of
