Subject Explorer 3D (SE-3D): Information Retrieval in a Virtual Reality Searching and Browsing Tool

In ancient Greece, in today鈥檚 businesses and on the Web, and into the future on the Semantic Web, humans organize information by labelling subject matter using controlled lists of concepts and their relations. Unfortunately, many searchers do not understand how information is organized leading to missed valuable information because of unknown synonyms and too many irrelevant citations in the results lists. My research attempts to address these problems through a novel and ambitious approach: the design, development and testing of a keyword searching subject browsing 3D interactive interface to a real world collection organized via the highly complex Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) structure. 聽The presentation will demonstrate the prototype application, describe research questions and the design of a controlled comparative usability experiment. Preliminary results will be discussed.
