Emergency Evacuation Drills

To learn more about safely evacuating a building at the sound of an alarm, view our

91 conducts a full fire-drill cycle in every occupied building once each academic year. The exercise serves three purposes: it verifies that alarm devices, strobes and voice-evacuation systems function as designed; it trains occupants to respond automatically to a real alarm; and it gives Evacuation Teams a chance to rehearse their coordinated roles.

Before each drill the Fire Prevention Office notifies Building Directors, who are responsible for passing the date and time window to all departments and tenants.

When the alarm sounds, leave immediately by the closest safe exit. Do not stop to collect belongings, use elevators or investigate the source of the alarm. Move clear of the building to the posted assembly point and stay there until security staff announce the “all clear.” If your normal exit is blocked, use your pre-identified alternate route.

Trained Evacuation Team members, easily recognised by high-visibility vests, sweep their assigned zones, direct traffic toward exits and assist anyone who needs help. Follow their instructions and report any disabled alarms, jammed doors or congestion points you notice during the drill.

FPO issues a brief after-action report to the Building Director, summarising the drill time, occupant response and any deficiencies found. Corrective actions—such as replacing faulty horns, clearing obstructed corridors or updating signage—are tracked to closure.
