King\, Foulkes and Crago will explore topics releva nt to Dr. King's wide-ranging career as a 'citizen-scientist\,' including  her pioneering cancer genetics discoveries for inherited ovarian and breas t cancers as well as her earlier work on the molecular similarities betwee n chimps and humans and her commitment to the development of DNA sequencin g for the identification of victims of human rights violations.\n\nThe Can ada Gairdner Awards promote a strong culture of research and innovation ac ross Canada through outreach programs\, including lectures and research sy mposia. International Awards are given to outstanding biomedical scientist s who have made original contributions to medicine resulting in an increas ed understanding of human biology and disease.\n\n \n\nAbout the speaker: \n\nMary-Claire King is an American Cancer Society Professor in the Depart ments of Medicine and Genome Sciences at the University of Washington Scho ol of Medicine\, in Seattle\, Washington. She is also an Affiliate Member of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.\n\nDr. King won the 2021 Ca nada Gairdner International Award for transforming cancer genetics and onc ology with the first report of convincing evidence for mendelian inheritan ce of susceptibility to breast cancer. She named this gene BRCA1. \n\nHer  passion for gene discovery integrated tools from genetics\, statistics\, m athematics\, epidemiology\, molecular biology\, genomics and clinical medi cine. Her revolutionary approach to gene discovery has had an impact on ma ny other diseases\, ranging from prostate cancer to inherited hearing loss to schizophrenia.\n\nAbout the moderators:\n\nWilliam Foulkes is a James 91 Professor of Medicine\, Human Genetics and Oncology at 91 Unive rsity. He is head of the Cancer Genetics Laboratory at the Lady Davis Inst itute for Medical Research and a member of the Cancer Research Program at the Research Institute of the MUHC. In 2020\, he was awarded the Wilder-Pe nfield prize from the government of Quebec for his work on inherited susce ptibility to cancer. He is a clinician\, who has been in charge of clinica l cancer genetics at 91-affiliated hospitals since 1996.\n\nMartha Cra go is 91’s Vice-Principal (Research and Innovation) and Cha ir of the Governing Council of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). In 2016\, the Minister of Science of Canada selected her to be a member of Canada’s Fundamental Science Review. Professor Crago wa s named a Chevalier dans l'ordre des palmes académiques by the French gove rnment and\, in 2017\, she was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada.  Dr. Crago comes from a family that has been affected by BRCA1 across at le ast four generations.\n DTSTART:20211026T200000Z DTEND:20211026T210000Z SUMMARY:A conversation with Dr. Mary-Claire King\, pioneering geneticist an d winner of the 2021 Canada Gairdner International Award URL:/research/channels/event/conversation-dr-mary-clai re-king-pioneering-geneticist-and-winner-2021-canada-gairdner-internationa l-333906 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
