In e cology\, a lake may undergo a runaway algal bloom as excess nutrients are deposited\; in medicine\, a human heart may transition to a dangerous arrh ythmia upon premature excitation\; in epidemiology\, a pandemic may rapidl y emerge from a sufficiently infectious virus. Two fundamental questions a re 1) can we determine the system-specific mechanisms that give rise to th ese bifurcations\, and 2) can we predict them. In this talk\, we discuss h ow the emergence of ‘big data’ can help with these endeavours\, while prov iding examples from our research in cardiology and ecology. This talk is a imed at a general scientific audience and does not require prior understan ding of bifurcations.\n DTSTART:20200922T160000Z DTEND:20200922T170000Z SUMMARY:QLS Seminar Series - Thomas Bury URL:/qls/channels/event/qls-seminar-series-thomas-bury -324222 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
