The first talk, From Learners to Speakers: Welsh Decline After School, by (PhD candidate, Swansea University, UK), situates Welsh within a minoritized-language context and asks what happens to young people’s use of Welsh after compulsory schooling ends at 16. Drawing on interview-based work that traces post-school language trajectories, the presentation considers why some maintain the language while others reduce use, and how these patterns speak to broader revitalization goals.

The second talk, Analysis of Pedagogical Practices in Foreign Language Teaching for the Formation of Global Citizenship: A Case Study at Colegio Gimnasio del Norte (Colombia), by Nayelis Lagos Torres and (Master’s students, Pontificia Universidad Javeriana), examines how a school’s foreign-language teaching and curriculum engage Global Citizenship Education (aligned with SDG 4.7). Using surveys, leadership interviews, and document analysis, the study explores practical pathways and tensions in embedding GCED within classroom practice.

The format would be 15-20 mins’ talk for each group followed by a group disccusion for 30-40 mins, in total 60-80 mins.

The presentations will be in English, with examples in other languages. Full abstracts are available on the Grad Talks page.

We invite students, faculty, educators, and community members to join the conversation—bring your questions, your languages, and your perspectives as we connect research with practice.
