As a Faculty of Arts B.A. student, you are expected to complete your programs and degree within a defined credit limit, which represents the maximum number of credits you are permitted to complete toward your degree.Ìý

What is the credit limit?

Your credit limit depends on whether you were granted advanced standing at admission:

1. Students with advanced standing:

(e.g., CEGEP, AP, IB, French Baccalaureate)

  • Credit limit = 120 credits + advanced standing credits
  • Examples:
    • A CEGEP student withÌý30 advanced standing credits = 150 credit limit
    • A high school student withÌý12 advanced standing credits = 132 credit limit

2. Students without advanced standing:

This includes:

  • Students admitted from high school without advanced standing
  • Students with more than 24 university transfer credits (transfer students)
  • Inter-Faculty Transfer (IFT) students
  • Credit limit = 120 credits total

Note for Bachelor of Social Work Students:ÌýThe credit limit for the B.S.W. degree is 90 credits. Students with advanced standing might may be eligible to exceed this limit; however, they must confirm their eligibility by submitting a request through the .

You will receive credit for all successfully completed courses (subject to degree and program regulations) up to the term in which you reach your credit limit.

Do you need permission to exceed the credit limit?

This depends on:

  1. Your total credits at the start of your graduating term (the term in which you plan to complete all degree and program requirements),Ìýand
  2. Whether you were grantedÌýadvanced standing credits at admission.

Step 1: Check your Minerva Unofficial Transcript:

  1. Log into Minerva
  2. Go to: Student Records Menu > View Unofficial Transcript
  • ​â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹Advanced Standing credits: look at Previous Education
  • Total Credits: listed at the end of your most recent term

Step 2: Understand your credit limit:

No Permission required

If you enter your graduating term below your credit limit.

e.g.ÌýYou haveÌý30Ìýadvanced standing credits and are entering your graduating term with 149 credits, you may be registered as a full-time student.

If you enter your graduating term below 120 credits.

e.g.ÌýYou have 0 advanced standing credits and are entering your graduating term with 119 credits, you may be registered as a full-time student.

Permission required If you enter your graduating term at or above your limit and want additional courses If you enter your graduating term at or above 120 credits and want additional courses

How to request permission to exceed 120 credits:Ìý

Step 1: Meet with aÌýdepartmental/program advisers to confirm required courses.

Step 2: Complete theÌýDegree Planning Worksheet

Name your file clearly: FirstName_ID#_DegreePlanningWorksheet

Example: Amanda_261XXXXXX_DegreePlanningWorksheet

Step 3: Submit yourÌýÌýwith your completed Degree Planning Worksheet.

What happens if your request is not approved?Ìý

If you exceed your credit limit without approval:Ìý

  • Elective courses may be E-flagged (excluded)Ìý
  • E-Flagged courses:ÌýÌý
    • Appear on your transcriptÌý
    • Do NOT count toward your GPA/CGPAÌý
    • Do NOT count toward your degree creditsÌý

How are requests evaluated?Ìý

  • Permission is granted only for valid academic reasons, such as completing remaining program requirements.Ìý
  • Permission to exceed the 120 credits degree maximum is not guaranteed.Ìý
  • Requests will not be approved for the following reasons:Ìý
    • Changing programs in your final year of studyÌý
    • Raising your CGPAÌý
    • Earning extra credits during Study AwayÌý
    • Taking prerequisites for future studies (e.g., grad school). Consider applying asÌýa Special Student during the academic year or during the Summer.Ìý
  • Approval does not guarantee space in requested courses.Ìý
