Sound Map: Night Screening at Film Noir Au Canal, Summer 2023

What are the methods for nocturnal cartographies? Join us for an experimental workshop in temporal countermapping practices for Montreal’s urban night, with Matthieu Caron, author of Montreal After Night, and the project “Night-time Design for/with Marginalized Communities.” We will begin by exploring how night studies have theorized how attending to the nocturnal challenges our habits of knowing, moving with and social dreaming in the city. We will then work with a sample case study from Matthieu Caron’s book to experiment with methods for the night. Finally, we will collectively work to generate a wild mapping of the Montreal night with examples and materials from participants. How do the specific challenges to representation that the night creates also provide opportunities to reimagine the city as we live and encounter it? How can such practices of imaginative and time-specific mapping impact our social imaginaries of what a city can do?
