 le: The Political Work of Musical Classifications\n\nOne of Anglo-American
  music theory’s principal projects is the creation and application of rigo
 rous classification schemes with which to describe music’s numerous formal
 \, spectral\, and temporal phenomena. In this talk\, I address the consequ
 ential yet still underexamined political implications of this descriptive 
 vocabulary by analyzing two distinctions that are common currency in music
 -theoretical discourse: polyphony/heterophony and structure/ornament. I ar
 gue that these classifications\, though appearing to be oriented to sonic 
 structures\, can reflect more about the limitations and propensities of th
 e analyst’s own sociopolitical positionality than about the acoustic featu
 res of the music being described. My aim in this paper is not to prescribe
  new definitions for these classifications\, but to consider how their exi
 sting usage reveals the tacit contours of a disciplinary “information infr
 astructure” (Bowker and Star 1999) that is invested in and responsive to h
 ow the communities who make and listen to sounds are themselves perceived 
 and classed.\n\nAnna Yu Wang (Princeton University) is a music theorist an
 d ethnographer concerned with what it means—and what it takes—to listen ac
 ross lines of difference. Her research brings music analysis\, field resea
 rch\, and examination of historical sources together to wrestle with the a
 esthetic and ideological questions confronting music studies in our global
 ly connected yet politically divided present.\n\nThe Doctoral Colloquium i
