Caplin (Classical Form 1998). These two tradi tions are rather different\, but ultimately involve the analysis of wholes according to the contextualization of their parts\, which I view as the d efinitive nature of functional analysis.\n\nI start with a description of analytical method from Carl Dahlhaus’s critique of Schenker (“Im namens Sc henker” 1983)\, before developing the above views of a musical function. I argue that Dahlhaus’s statements on music analysis (i.e.\, philosophical hermeneutic method expressed in an idealistic way)\, and a theory of music al function applied to music analysis are fundamentally incompatible. Ulti mately Dahlhaus’s individualist view produces one accent of music analysis \, while more theoretical apparatuses produce another\, contrasting accent .\n\n\nBio: Laurence Sinclair Willis is a music researcher at the Kunst Un iversität Graz\, Austria where his project “Postwar Germanic and Anglophon e Formenlehre” investigates the history of Formenlehre in the late-twentie th Century. His research interests include Formenlehre\, late-Romantic har mony\, and microtonality. He translated the monograph Musical Composition in the Context of Globalization (2021) by Christian Utz.\n DTSTART:20240221T213000Z DTEND:20240221T230000Z LOCATION:A-832\, Elizabeth Wirth Music Building\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 1E3\, 527 rue Sherbrooke Ouest SUMMARY:Doctoral Colloquium (Music) | Laurence Willis URL:/music/channels/event/doctoral-colloquium-music-la urence-willis-354600 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
