As a pianist\, he has performed across North America. As a th eorist\, Dr. Swinkin has published in such journals as Music Analysis\, Th e Journal of Musicology\, and the Journal of the Aesthetics and Sociology of Music. He is the author and editor of five books\, including the forthc oming Oxford Handbook of Musical Variation and Thematic Techniques. Dr. Sw inkin is Associate Professor of Music at the University of Oklahoma.\n\nAb stract: I offer here a resolutely anti-formalist stance\, even as I focus on formal\, metric\, motivic\, and Schenkerian structures. For\, I locate those structures not in the score (or the sound patterns it represents) bu t rather in the interpretive domain. That is\, I posit that scores have no intrinsic determinate features other than pitches and rhythms. All other properties come down to constructive interpretation. This talk\, after exp ounding the above\, will outline and exemplify four interpretive strategie s: (1) amplifying a thematic feature via repetition\; (2) structurally int egrating a feature via motivic enlargement\; (3) identifying and grappling with a thematic ambiguity\; and (4) locating and actualizing a thematic p otentiality. The talk will conclude by anticipating and briefly answering three possible objections.\n\n \n DTSTART:20231129T213000Z DTEND:20231129T230000Z LOCATION:A-832\, Elizabeth Wirth Music Building\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 1E3\, 527 rue Sherbrooke Ouest SUMMARY:Doctoral Colloquium (Music) | Jeffrey Swinkin URL:/music/channels/event/doctoral-colloquium-music-je ffrey-swinkin-351675 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
