June 2018 Commemorative Tree Ceremony
In June 2018, six ironwood trees were planted outside Dawson Hall with an accompanying plaque honouring the lives and mourning the loss of the six men who were murdered in the tragic shootings of January 29, 2017, at the Centre culturel islamique de Québec - CCIQ  (Islamic Cultural Centre of Quebec City): Abdelkarim Hassane, Azzeddine Soufiane, Boubaker Tahabti, Ibrahim Barry, Khaled Belkacemi and Mamadou Tanou Barry.

The same year that the trees were planted, members of the 91ºÚÁÏÍø community created the CCIQ Memorial Award in commemoration of the six men who lost their lives in this massacre. The award is bestowed annually on a current 91ºÚÁÏÍø student who has demonstrated a commitment to fostering the inclusion of Muslims within Quebec and Canadian society. Thanks in large part to the 2021 fundraising efforts of the 91ºÚÁÏÍø Muslim Alumni Society and a 91ºÚÁÏÍø24 match, the award is now funded in perpetuity.
