 essors Lecture Series.\n\nThe pancreatic beta cell has the capacity to ada
 pt to changes in its metabolic environment\, for example when obesity- or 
 aging-related insulin resistance develops\, by increasing its functional m
 ass. However\, in some individuals this adaptive mechanism is defective\, 
 and type 2 diabetes ensues. Deciphering the cellular and molecular basis o
 f beta-cell compensation to metabolic stress may provide insights into why
  and how it sometimes fails.\n\nDr. Vincent Poitout’s team has developed p
 reclinical models to understand the beta-cell response to nutrient surfeit
  and insulin resistance. In recent studies\, they characterized the beta-c
 ell response to combined\, elevated levels of glucose and fatty acids and 
 to the transient insulin resistance associated with puberty.\n\nA precise 
 understanding of the mechanisms whereby the beta cell adapts to its metabo
 lic environment might eventually help identify ways to prevent or delay th
 e onset of type 2 diabetes.\n\nThis lecture will be in English. Questions 
 will be welcome in both official languages.\n\nThe Distinguished Professor
 s Lecture Series will generally take place in the Cruess Auditorium of the
  Glen site on the last Thursday of every month\, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.\, 
 followed by networking and light refreshments.\n\nWe encourage you to make
