 ee-dimensional space (a famous example is M.C. Escher’s “impossible stairc
 ase”). I will describe a short article of Penrose\, titled “On the Cohomol
 ogy of Impossible Figures”\, which describes how the failure of these shap
 es to exist in space can be measured using Čech cohomology. No knowledge o
 f topology is assumed.\n\n \n\nThis seminar was made possible by funding f
