In general\, this definition is correct\, however\, it d oes not seem to capture the subtleties hidden in modelling real world phen omena. In 1976\, George Box stated ‘Since all models are wrong the scienti st cannot obtain a “correct” one by excessive elaboration’ which simplifie s to the common aphorism of “All models are wrong but some are useful”. Gi ven the above definition of statistics and the statement of Box\, how can the statistician bridge the gap between collected data and well-defined ma thematical models which are potentially incorrect? In this talk\, we discu ss how statistics is introduced at an undergraduate university level and h ow seemingly basic concepts can be generalized using rigorous mathematics. Time permitting\, some current research problems will be introduced.\n DTSTART:20171103T160000Z DTEND:20171103T160000Z LOCATION:Graduate Lounge\, BURN 1024/1025\, Burnside Hall\, CA\, QC\, Montr eal\, H3A 0B9\, 805 rue Sherbrooke Ouest SUMMARY:Graduate Student Seminar - James McVittie URL:/mathstat/channels/event/graduate-student-seminar- james-mcvittie-282330 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
