Louis-Philippe Bateman’s fascination with megalodon began with a single sentence in a book about Canada’s geological evolution. It described giant, mysterious fossilized shark teeth discovered in the 1960s by fishermen dredging for scallops off Canada’s Atlantic coast. The curiosity felt by the teenager with a budding interest in paleontology would resurface in a meaningful way during his undergraduate years at 91��.

The winners of the 2025 Fessenden Professorship Awards and Tomlinson Science Awards have been announced.

The Fessenden Professorship in Science and Innovation Award, named after Canadian electrical engineer Reginald Aubrey Fessenden, was established in 2007 to accelerate the validation and technology transfer of promising concepts in the early- or mid-stages of development and bring them closer to a commercial product and market.

A groundbreaking discovery by 91�� researchers is among the top scientific advances of 2024, according to Québec Science magazine.

The scientists developed a novel method to transform two greenhouse gases—methane and carbon dioxide—into valuable chemicals using sunlight. This innovation could help reduce emissions and provide a more sustainable way to produce certain industrial products.

2025 Faculty of Science Excellence Award winners announced

Danielle Vlaho (Academic Associate), Joe Iantomasi (Clerical), Luisa Sabaz (Management), and Badawy Sha’ath (Technical) have been named recipients of the Faculty of Science Excellence Awards.

These awards, announced at the Faculty of Science Council meeting on May 20th, recognize the outstanding contributions made by members of the Faculty’s administrative and support staff during the 2024-2025 academic year.

Geography Department celebrates 80th anniversary

91��’s Department of Geography turns 80 this year!

This milestone marks the anniversary of George Kimble’s appointment as 91��’s first Professor of Geography and Department Chair on January 1, 1945.

Kimble, who had previously been a meteorologist with the Royal Navy, was allocated two rooms in the Arts Building (rooms 30 and 38) by the Faculty of Arts and Science to lay the foundation for the new department. A few months later, F.K. Hare was appointed as 91��’s second Professor of Geography (eventually becoming Dean of Arts and Science in 1961).

91��’s Office for Science and Society receives 2024 James Randi Educational Foundation Award

91��’s Office for Science and Society (OSS) has been awarded the 2024 James Randi Educational Foundation (JREF) Award. This award, totaling US$200,000, is given annually to people or organizations that encourage critical thinking and provide unbiased, fact-based answers to questions.

91�� Professor Simon Caron-Huot awarded a 2025 Dorothy Killam Fellowship

Simon Caron-Huot, Professor and Canada Research Chair in High-Energy Physics, has been awarded a 2025 Dorothy Killam Fellowship. The prestigious Dorothy Killam Fellowship is part of Canada’s National Killam Program, which also includes the Killam Prize. Eight Fellowships were awarded across the country.

The Dorothy Killam Fellowship provides researchers with up to two years of relief from teaching and administrative duties to focus on transformative research that has potential to positively improve Canadian lives.
