Everyone is welcome to attend\n\nThe inflammatory bowel dise ases (IBD)\, Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are characterized by r elapsing symptoms of watery or bloody diarrhea\, abdominal pain\, fatigue\ , and weight loss\, which often is devastating for the patients and their families. Developing nations have a lower incidence of IBD compared to dev eloped nations\, whereas Canada ranks as one of the nations with the highe st incidences worldwide. Different hypothesis to account for this observat ion have been proposed. Among these is the suggestion that the absence of gastrointestinal parasites in Canadians may be a contributing factor for t he higher prevalence. High levels of parasitic helminth infections in deve loping nations\, potentially provides an evolutionary advantage for protec tion against chronic inflammatory diseases. Dr Lopes's research seeks to e lucidate signalling cascades or pathways that are controlled by molecules released by helminths in modulating inflammation. Ultimately\, this will p rovide novel pharmaceutical solutions to mimic the advantages that parasit ic infections provide.\n\nABOUT THE SPEAKER\n\nDr. Lopes is an assistant p rofessor in the Institute of Parasitology and the Department of Microbiolo gy and Immunology at 91ºÚÁÏÍø. His research focuses on Immuno-met abolism and Host-Parasite Interaction modulating Inflammatory Responses\, targeting to develop novel treatments for inflammatory diseases such as Cr ohn's disease\, ulcerative colitis and rheumatoid arthritis.\n DTSTART:20200206T210000Z DTEND:20200206T210000Z LOCATION:R3-048\, Raymond Building\, CA\, QC\, St Anne de Bellevue\, H9X 3V 9\, 21111 Lakeshore Road SUMMARY:4 O'Clock Forum: Chemistry lessons I learned from worms to control inflammation URL:/macdonald/channels/event/4-oclock-forum-chemistry -lessons-i-learned-worms-control-inflammation-318009 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
