Two case studies wer e selected\, the Yanacocha mine in Peru and the Cordillera del Condor regi on in Ecuador. The aim from these studies is to illustrate the dynamic cha nge in social and environmental struggles over the evolution of mining pro jects according to the development stage of the mine.\n\nThe first analysi s of this thesis details a conceptual framework derived from the work of p hysicist Nicholas Georgescu-Roegen is used to understand mining as an econ omic productive process with entropic consequences. This analysis identifi es the possibility to define ‘biophysical limits to mining extraction’ und erstood as the threshold to which ore extraction\, resource use and waste generation are socially permitted. As decision-making regarding mining is not straightforward\, the role of deliberative participation is emphasized in order to clearly define tradeoffs between biophysical requirements\, e nvironmental constraints and social conditions.\n\n...The second half of t his research focuses attention on the Cordillera del Condor\, Southern Ama zon of Ecuador\, where three large-scale mining projects are located. Two studies analyze the socio-political definitions and interests that determi ne the institutional and territorial changes accommodating political minin g interests.\n\nEveryone in the 91ºÚÁÏÍø community is welcome to attend a Ph D oral defense. Please join us in celebrating the accomplishments of our P hD candidates.\n\n \n\n \n DTSTART:20161118T141500Z DTEND:20161118T141500Z LOCATION:R3-045\, Raymond Building\, CA\, QC\, St Anne de Bellevue\, H9X 3V 9\, 21111 Lakeshore Road SUMMARY:PhD Oral Defense: Mining\, environments and people: Depicting envir onmental\, socio-economic and political understandings of mining conflicts in Cajamarca\, Peru and Cordillera del Condor\, Ecuador URL:/macdonald/channels/event/phd-oral-defense-mining- environments-and-people-depicting-environmental-socio-economic-and-politic al-263763 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
