Presently\, there are four proposed mechanisms for their fo rmation all involving SN2 nucleophilic attack by chloride ions but differi ng from each other based on either the nature of the substrate or the leav ing group. Two of the proposed mechanisms involve direct nucleophilic atta ck by the chloride ion at the glycerol carbon atoms carrying either an est er group or a protonated hydroxyl group. The alternative two pathways prop ose the formation of reactive intermediates such as a cyclic acyloxonium i on or an epoxide ring in the form of glycidol prior to the nucleophilic at tack by chloride ions. \nEveryone in the 91ºÚÁÏÍø community is welcome to at tend a PhD oral defense. Please join us in celebrating the accomplishments of our PhD candidates.
