Three phenomena\, in pa rticular\, have contributed to shape its fortunes over the last few years. \n\n\n A continued pattern of interference by states\, both traditional aut horitarian and new populists\, along with monitoring of universities\, req uirements of advance notification of events including international partic ipants\, discriminatory denials of visas and invasive radicalization preve ntion programs.\n Challenges to the professorate have begun to manifest the mselves within the classroom as students demand content and pedagogy more reflective of society’s diversity.\n A range of more diffuse forces have ar guably constrained academic freedom. These include the continued effects o f corporatization of universities\, the influences of private funding\, ac ademic employment precarity\, austerity measures amidst budget crises\, an d global rankings competition.\n\n\nIn that fraught context\, the very mea ning of academic freedom has become less clear. It can be invoked in coded ways and at counter-purpose to justify greater control of universities\; it can sometimes appear as little more than a reflex invocation disconnect ed from its origin\; and it suffers from ambiguities long associated with the notion of freedom.\n\nif you have questions\, kindly write to human.ri ghts [at] mcgill.ca.\n\n \n DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20210609 DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20210610 LOCATION:Zoom: https://mcgill.zoom.us/j/85114784769 SUMMARY:Academic Freedom in a Plural World: Global Critical Perspectives URL:/law/channels/event/academic-freedom-plural-world- global-critical-perspectives-330872 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
