The speakers will discuss the following four cases:\n\nJean Brault - A disabled man who\, to meet the end-of-life criterion of Bill 52\, bega n a hunger strike that lasted 53 days.\n Jocelyne Lizotte - A patient suffe ring from advanced Alzheimer’s dementia who was denied access to MAID beca use she was deemed incompetent.\n Kate Cheney - An 85-year-old with inopera ble cancer who was judged competent to access MAID in Oregon\, despite not able cognitive problems and possible pressure from family members.\n Véroni que Dorval - A woman with bipolar disorder who took her life after being d enied access to MAID.\nAbout the speakers\n\nDr. Jocelyn Downie teaches he alth care ethics and law at Dalhousie University. She has written extensiv ely on end-of-life legislation and assisted-dying in Canada.\n\nMe. Jean-P ierre Ménard has worked as a patient advocate and lawyer practicing health law in Quebec for over 30 years. He chaired the judicial committee appoin ted by the Quebec National Assembly to make legal recommendations on Quebe c’s first MAID legislation.\n\nDr. Alain Naud is a family and palliative c are physician in Quebec City\, as well as a Full Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of Université Laval. He was the first health professional to p ublicly discuss his personal experience providing MAID in Quebec.\n\nOrgan ized by the Medical Student Study Group on Physician-Assisted Dying\, the 91 Law Journal of Law and Health\, and the 91 Law Students Associa tion.
