 rone Memos\n\nThe Drone Memos collects for the first time the legal and po
 licy documents underlying the U.S. government’s controversial practice of 
 “targeted killing”—the extrajudicial killing of suspected terrorists and m
 ilitants\, typically using drones.\n\nThe documents—including the Presiden
 tial Policy Guidance that provides the framework for drone strikes today\,
  Justice Department white papers addressing the assassination of an Americ
 an citizen\, and a highly classified legal memo that was published only af
 ter a landmark legal battle involving the ACLU\, the New York Times\, and 
 the CIA—together constitute a remarkable effort to legitimize a practice t
 hat most human rights experts consider to be unlawful and that the United 
 States has historically condemned.\n\nJaffer\, who led the ACLU legal team
  that secured the release of many of the documents\, evaluates the “drone 
 memos” in light of domestic and international law. He connects the documen
 ts’ legal abstractions to the real-world violence they allow\, and makes t
 he case that we are trading core principles of democracy and human rights 
 for the illusion of security.\n\nAbout Jameel Jaffer\n\nDirector of the Kn
 ight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University and former Deputy Le
 gal Director of the ACLU\, Jaffer oversaw the ACLU’s work relating to nati
 onal security for almost a decade and litigated some of the most significa
 nt cases concerning U.S. counterterrorism policy after 9/11.\n\nA prominen
 t commentator and speaker on issues relating to civil liberties and human 
 rights\, Jaffer has written for the New York Times\, the Los Angeles Times
 \, The Guardian\, Index on Censorship\, and the Harvard Law Review Forum. 
 He is the author of The Drone Memos: Targeted Killing\, Secrecy\, and the 
 Law (The New Press) and co-author with Amrit Singh of Administration of To
 rture: A Documentary Record from Washington to Abu Ghraib and Beyond.\n\nC
 anadian Journalists for Free Expression awarded Jaffer the Vox Libera Awar
 d in 2015 and Foreign Policy magazine listed him as one of its “Top 100 Gl
