Pearson Chair in Civil Society and Public Poli cy welcomes anthropologist and ethnologist Marc Abélès\, Director of Studi es\, École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS).\n\nAbstract\n\n How can an anthropologist contribute to a better understanding of contempo rary institutions ? By contrast with sociological studies\, anthropology  provides an ethnographic perspective\, an analysis of everyday practices a nd representations. It emphasizes macro-micro articulations\, and seeks to illuminate how power circulates and irrigates the structures and the func tioning of institutions.\n\nThis ethnographic work requires patience and i nteractivity. To show what is at stake in this kind of approach\, I would like to present the fieldwork I did in two different contexts\, national a nd international: the French Parliament and the World Trade Organisation. These two institutions share a common vocation: they aim to produce norms which will impact the economic and social life of the people. However\, th ere is a significant gap between the political practices observed in the F rench assembly and the transnational diplomacy at work in the WTO.\n\nPutt ing together these two experiences\, I will propose some reflections based on my ethnographic explorations in the field of institutions.\n DTSTART:20151124T200000Z DTEND:20151124T213000Z LOCATION:Common Room\, Chancellor Day Hall\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 1W9\, 3644 rue Peel SUMMARY:Exploring Institutions : an Ethnographic Perspective URL:/law/channels/event/exploring-institutions-ethnogr aphic-perspective-246061 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
