DESCRIPTION:His Excellency Judge James Crawford AC\nJames Crawford AC\, FBA
  was elected a Judge of the International Court of Justice in The Hague in
  November 2014 and took up this position in February 2015 for a 9-year ter
 m. Previously he was Whewell Professor of International Law at the Univers
 ity of Cambridge\; he has also held chairs at Adelaide\, Sydney and LaTrob
 e Universities in Australia and as Chang Jiang Distinguished Professor at 
 Xi’an Jiaotong University\, PRC. He was responsible for the ILC’s work on 
 the International Criminal Court (1994) and for the second reading of the 
 ILC Articles on State Responsibility (2001).\nDuring his practicing career
 \, he appeared as counsel in some 100 cases before the International Court
  of Justice and other international tribunals. He has also been an active 
 arbitrator both in inter-state and investment treaty disputes. His publica
 tions include The Creation of States in International Law (2nd ed.\, 2006)
 \; Brownlie’s Principles of Public International Law (8th ed.\, 2012)\; St
 ate Responsibility: The General Part (2013)\, and Chance\, Order\, Change:
  The Course of International Law (2014).\nAbout the Justice Charles D. Gon
 thier Lecture Series\nAs those who had the privilege to know him are aware
 \, judicial integrity\, responsibility and fraternity were important value
 s to the Honourable Judge Charles D. Gonthier (1928-2009)\, and he support
 ed research\, education and practical activities to promote sustainable de
 velopment\, in its economic\, environmental and social dimensions. The leg
 acy of values he embraced is kept alive through the Gonthier Endowment Fun
 d established in his name\, to support a new series of biennial Lectures.

 urists and others from across Canada and the world\, eager to broaden thei
 r minds on emerging law\, justice and sustainability concerns\, at the ina
