This bilingual and student-based initia tive promotes interdisciplinary dialogue on issues where the law and healt h intersect\, with the goal of encouraging the development of better healt h care policy in Canada.\n \n The Colloquium will facilitate a critical disc ussion of the Act’s merits\, particularly with respect to the perceived te nsion between the promotion of public safety and the protection of the rig hts of mentally ill persons accused of criminal offences. This year’s pane lists will discuss the Act’s potential to achieve its goal of increasing p ublic safety in light of its possible implications on society’s understand ing and treatment of mental illness.\n \n The MJLH will welcome a panel of g uests from across the country\, including: Mr. Michael Arruda\, from the S ervice de police de la Ville de MontrĂ©al\; Dr. Patrick Baillie\, from the Mental Health Commission of Canada\; Dr. Hy Bloom\, Adjunct Professor at t he University of Toronto’s Faculty of Law and Assistant Professor in the D epartment of Medicine\; Dr. RenĂ©e Fugère\, from l’Institut Philippe-Pinel de MontrĂ©al\; Dr. Archibald Kaiser\, from the Schulich School of Law and t he Department of Psychiatry at Dalhousie University\; and\, the Honourable Justice Mr. Richard Schneider\, Chair of the Ontario Review Board.
