  reform path within the existing international investment regime that many
  other states\, including the United States\, support. It is one path that
  might lead to a new gold standard\, but it is not the only way to get the
 re\, and indeed what one considers a 'gold standard' could change.\n\nLe c

 ociety of International Law and a member of the Council on Foreign Relatio
 ns and the Institut de Droit International\, José Enrique Alvarez has made
  substantial scholarly contributions to a wide range of subjects within in
 ternational law\, including the law-generating roles of international orga
 nizations\, the challenges facing international criminal tribunals\, and t
 he international investment regime.\n\nAlvarez has been a special adviser 
 on international law to the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court
 \, an attorney adviser with the Office of the Legal Adviser of the US Depa
 rtment of State\, and has taught at Columbia\, the University of Michigan\
 , George Washington\, and Georgetown law schools. Alvarez is the co-editor
 -in-chief of the leading peer-reviewed journal in the field\, the American
  Journal of International Law. His series of lectures at The Hague Academy
  of International Law on the subject of foreign investment was subsequentl
 y published as The Public International Law Regime Governing International
  Investment (2011).\n\nHis areas of research include Foreign Investment\, 
 International Criminal Law and Courts\, International Organizations\, and
