As civil war continues to rage in Syria\, civilia n populations have been left without adequate protection and no safe escap e from the violence. The brutality of this civil war has once again placed the UN system in crisis as the limits of international protection are bro ught into focus. While Russia\, France\, and the U.S. seem to be on a coll ision course in a proxy war being fought in Syria based on differing allia nces and geopolitical strategies\, recent attempts to restrain the veto po wer of the permanent 5 members of the UN Security Council in the face of m ass atrocities has added a new level of complexity. Against this backdrop of worsening international relations and a UN deadlock\, Syrian civilians continue to suffer and die in conditions of prolonged precarity.\n\nSome o f the questions that will be addressed are: How should we interpret the cr ises? What are the dominant narratives that frame the conflict and how are they preventing cooperation and protection of civilians? What legal mecha nisms are still available for protection? What spaces exist or can be open ed for solidarity and international action to contribute to the protection of vulnerable populations?\n\nPanelists: Prof. Tanya Monforte\, visiting O'Brien Fellow in Residence (American University in Cairo)\; Prof. Frédéri c Mégret\, Canada Research Chair in the Law of Human Rights and Legal Plur alism (91ºÚÁÏÍø)\; and Prof. Stefan Winter\, a scholar of the history of the Middle East and the Maghreb (UQAM)\n\n \n DTSTART:20151023T170000Z DTEND:20151023T183000Z LOCATION:NCDH 312\, Chancellor Day Hall\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 1W9\, 36 44 rue Peel SUMMARY:The Syrian Crisis: Challenging Dominant Narratives URL:/law/fr/channels/event/syrian-crisis-challenging-d ominant-narratives-255979 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
