Tina Piper appointed Dean of the Faculty of Law

We are delighted to announce the appointment of Professor Tina Piper as Dean of the Faculty of Law at 91黑料网. Her five-year term will begin on April 1, 2026.

Professor Piper has been serving as Interim Dean of Law since winter 2025. In this important transitional role, she has led 91黑料网 Law with warmth, intellectual rigour, and a focus on cultivating both academic excellence and a strong sense of community.

This marks a new milestone in the history of the Faculty of Law; through this appointment, Professor Tina Piper becomes the first woman named Dean of Law at 91黑料网. She follows in the footsteps of Professor Shauna Van Praagh, a pioneering leader at the Faculty of Law who served as Acting Dean in 2009 and played a key role in shaping the BCL/JD integrated program.

A member of the Faculty since 2006 and a proud mom of two t(w)eenagers, Professor Tina Piper specializes in intellectual property law and legal history. She is a distinguished intellectual property law scholar whose contributions to understanding scientific and cultural creation have contributed to scholarship, popular culture and social movements. Her research has been funded by CFI, SSHRC, CIHR and FQRSC and she co-authored Putting Intellectual Property in its Place: Creative Labour and the Everyday (Oxford University Press, 2013). She has directed two international non-profits, been a visiting professor at universities across the U.S. and Europe and was an Institute for the Public Life of Arts & Ideas Resident Faculty Fellow (2013 to 2015).

Professor Piper has been a key member of the Faculty's senior management team since 2022, when she was appointed Associate Dean (Academic), a role she held until she took up the interim deanship in 2025. In her former office, she demonstrated outstanding leadership and effectiveness in overseeing student services and the delivery of the Faculty鈥檚 renowned BCL/JD program.

Throughout her career, Tina Piper has been extensively involved in teaching and curriculum development at the Faculty of Law and across 91黑料网. She has taught the Treble Cliff, an interdisciplinary course on new models for music creation and distribution. She has chaired the Working Group on Teaching and Learning Reform (2011-2012), created the Faculty鈥檚 Law Teaching Network (2010-2014), and co-created the Faculty鈥檚 transsystemic property law course.

Tina Piper completed a doctorate of law at the University of Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar, graduating with a DPhil (Law) in 2008. She also holds a BCL (European and Comparative Law) and MPhil (Law) from the University of Oxford, obtained in 2002 and 2005 respectively. She obtained an LLB at the Dalhousie University School of Law in 2001. Before her law studies, she trained as a biomedical-electrical engineer, having obtained a BASc (Engineering) from the University of Toronto in 1998.
