Launching the Annual Bergman/Pilon Lectureship in Aging

The Simone and Edouard Schouela Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Health of Seniors (Schouela CEDurable) a part of the 91�� Réseau universitaire intégré de santé et services sociaux (RUISSS), based at the Centre intégré universitaire de santé et de services sociaux (CIUSSS) du Centre-Ouest-de-l’Île-de-Montréal, is launching the Bergman/Pilon Lectureship in Aging, a new annual initiative that celebrates excellence in aging research, care, education, and policy.

This month we’ve had ice storms, warm temperatures, extreme winds, multiple snowfalls, Spring Break and our Department participation at the St Patrick’s Day parade!

Over the past month, there was a lot of activity going on in addition to the winter Olympic games!

Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS) interviews to select the Department of Family Medicine’s next cohort of 113 residents were completed and the results of the match will be revealed on March 3 at noon. If you are in the area, come join us at 5858 Côte-des-Neiges, 3rd floor, for this special annual moment. There will be pizza!

For many Department members, the most significant event this month was the agreement reached between the Fédération des Médecins Omnipracticiens du Québec and the provincial government to put a halt to Law 2. At the time of writing, the result of the FMOQ members’ vote on the agreement is not available, but it appears likely that it will be approved. If that happens, the Department of Family Medicine will start the work of repairing the damage that occurred in the 7 weeks of Law 2 (retirements, departures, etc.) to further our vision of education, research, and patient care.

Alexandra Massicotte named finalist for the Emerging Practitioner Award from the Collège des Médecins du Québec

Alexandra Massicotte, MD, physician and Unit Director at the Department of Family Medicine’s Vaudreuil-Soulanges U-FMG, has been named a finalist for the Emerging Practitioner Award (catégorie Relève) from the Collège des médecins du Québec (CMQ). This distinction recognizes early-career physicians who demonstrate outstanding leadership, innovation, community engagement, and commitment to advancing medical practice.

The month of October has been a whirlwind of both positive and negative moments. On October 23 and 24 our Annual Department Retreat took place and was a tremendous success! On Day 1, we discussed the realities, opportunities and challenges of Distributed Medical Education. It was great to see so many of our rural teachers come together. On Day 2, we explored the theme of Human and Digital Integration in Family Medicine. Thank you to all those who participated so wholeheartedly -- your commitment, curiosity and passion came through. Together, we were truly Connected by Care!

September has brought a dramatic start to the academic year. As you will be aware, the Fédération des médecins spécialistes du Québec (FMSQ) has been using the suspension of medical student teaching as a pressure tactic to push for the withdrawal of Bill 106.

Marisa Zampini, MD, and Jean Zigby, MD, both members of 91��’s Department of Family Medicine, received the inaugural Jonathan & Susan Wener Family Outstanding Physician Award during the Jewish General Hospital (JGH) Foundation’s Annual General Meeting, hosted on September 17.
