Mark Clarfield\, Director of Medical School of International Health and Director of Global Health\, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev\n\n \n\nThis talk will explore the fascinating biology of ag ing and why this is so challenging in our present day and age. From the st arting point of genetics\, Dr. Clarfield will explain why we get old (usua lly) but\, more importantly\, why and how we cannot last forever despite t he advances in modern day medicine. He will also give some basic advice on how we can increase the likelihood of living and enjoying a relatively he althy and happy old age.\n\nDr. A. Mark Clarfield was brought up and educa ted in Toronto\, receiving his MD from the University of Toronto in 1975. He went on to specialize first in Family Medicine\, then\, Community Medic ine and Public Health and\, finally\, in Geriatrics. Together with his wif e\, Dr. Ora Paltiel who is also a physician\, they moved to Montreal where he was with the Faculty of Medicine at 91ºÚÁÏÍø from 1978 -1992. During that period\, Dr. Clarfield was Chief of Geriatrics at the Sir Mor timer B. Davis – Jewish General Hospital\, as well as head of the 91ºÚÁÏÍø U niversity Division of Geriatric Medicine. He was the Assistant Dean of Stu dents at the Faculty from 1989-92 and reached the rank of Professor. He ma intains his adjunct professor appointment at 91ºÚÁÏÍø.\n\nIn 1992 \, he moved to Israel and from 1994-2001\, he was Head of the Division of Geriatrics at the Ministry of Health in Jerusalem. Shortly thereafter he w as appointed Head of Geriatrics at the Soroka Hospital and the Sidonie Hec ht Professor of Geriatrics at Ben-Gurion University in Beer-sheva\, where he now works.
