Back in April, 91��’s first university-wide Accessibility Strategy was presented to Senate, where it was very well received. That moment marked the end of a long phase of consultation and planning, and the beginning of something even more exciting: implementation.

91�� is inviting students, staff and faculty with disabilities to signal their interest in participating in the Accessibility Strategy Implementation Committee (ASIC).

As we move into the implementation phase of 91��’s first university-wide Accessibility Strategy, the ASIC will play a central role in guiding, advising, and monitoring progress. The committee will bring together representatives from key units and governance bodies, alongside members of the university community who bring critical insight from their own lived experience.

On a perfect September afternoon, members of our Black, Disabled, and Queer Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) came together for a special lunch event, bringing a sense of community and camaraderie to the space next to the Otto Maass building. Held on September 10, this gathering was a wonderful opportunity to connect, share experiences, and build stronger bonds across the ERGs.

Reflecting on 91��’s Disability ERG Relaunch: Embracing Disability Pride

In a virtual gathering on April 30, 91��'s Employee Resource Group (ERG) on Disability experienced a heartening revival. Thanks to the convenience of remote engagement, approximately 15 people from units and departments across campus joined us during their lunch break to explore the theme of Disability Pride. The event was graced by the presence of Alicia-Ann Pauld, a local disability rights activist and 91�� Masters student, whose insights into the history of Disability Pride left a lasting impact on participants.

For Black History Month, 91��’s Black Student Affairs Liaison and Black Student Network are collaborating on an event bringing together a variety of Black actors and voices from the 91�� community. In an effort to encourage professional development and community dialogue, they have put together a panel of authors, editors and journalists to speak on the channels and pathways used by Black creatives to have their voices heard through various print mediums.

The sexuality of people with disabilities is a subject that remains “taboo” in an age when the meaning of the word is constantly losing ground. Thirty years after the proclamation of International Day of Persons with Disabilities by the UN, general attitudes and perceptions around sex and disability fail to evolve, leaving many disabled individuals and their communities to grapple with unfathomable, complex and often life-defining issues.
