These measures un derpin international rankings such as the World Happiness Report and infor m policy initiatives worldwide\, yet their comparability has not been esta blished with contemporary global data. Using the Gallup World Poll\, Globa l Flourishing Study\, and World Values Survey\, I show that the two questi on formats yield divergent distributions\, rankings\, and response pattern s that vary across countries and surveys\, defying simple explanations. To explore differences in respondents’ cognitive interpretations\, I compare regression coefficients from the Global Flourishing Study\, analyzing how each question wording relates to life circumstances. While international rankings of wellbeing are unstable\, the study of the determinants of life evaluations appears more robust. Together\, the findings underscore the n eed for a renewed research agenda on critical limitations to cross-country comparability of wellbeing.\n\nwith Professor Christopher Barrington-Leig h\n\nThursday\, November 13th\, 2025\, from 12:00-1:00 pm\n\nLocation: 200 1 91 College Avenue\, Room 1140\; zoom\n\nRegister here\n DTSTART:20251113T170000Z DTEND:20251113T180000Z LOCATION:11th floor room 1140\, 91 College 2001\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 1G1\, 2001\, avenue 91 College SUMMARY:Are international happiness rankings reliable?
