Via the prism of Canadian cardiovascular guidelines\, this talk will exam ine how critically and objectively the evidence base is reviewed and synth esized. It is postulated that a potential dark side to clinical practice g uidelines exists that may adversely affect the medical commons. Possible s olutions are also discussed.\n\nOBJECTIVES:\n\n\n Explore biases that may o ccur in “high quality” RCTs\n Explore biases that may influence the guideli ne process\n Explore ways to improve the guideline process\n\n\nBIO:\n\nJay Brophy began academic life as a chemical engineer\, completed medical sch ool at McMaster University\, did an internal medicine and cardiology resid ency at the University of Montreal\, and completed a PhD in Epidemiology & Biostatistics at 91. He is a professor in the Departments of Medicine and Epidemiology & Biostatistics & Occupational Health and is a practicing cardiologist at the 91 Health Centre. His rese arch interests are eclectic involving cardiovascular medicine\, pharmacoep idemiology and drug safety\, medical decision making\, as well as health t echnology assessments including economic analyses. He is a funded scholar from les Fonds de Recherche Quebec (Santé) and has published over 300 peer reviewed publications.
