During the Age of Mass Migration\, persistently high f ertility created a large reservoir of surplus labor that could find better opportunities in the New World. We denote such migrations\, from labor-ab undant to land-abundant regions\, as Malthusian migrations. Our results ho ld in a variety of datasets and specifications\, across countries\, region s\, individuals\, and periods. Using linguistic distance from French and t win births as instruments for fertility in crowdsourced genealogical data\ , we estimate a large effect of fertility on out-migration. Within househo lds\, later born children were more likely to migrate as fertility increas ed\, particularly in regions with egalitarian inheritance. We develop a Ma lthusian model allowing for emigration as a way to escape population press ures\, alleviating the negative effects of high fertility and contributing to the emergence of modern economic growth.\n\n \n\n \n DTSTART:20241001T160000Z DTEND:20241001T170000Z LOCATION:Room 429\, Leacock Building\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 2T7\, 855 r ue Sherbrooke Ouest SUMMARY:Guillaume Blanc (University of Manchester)\, 'Malthusian Migrations ' URL:/economics/channels/event/guillaume-blanc-universi ty-manchester-malthusian-migrations-353883 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
