Rise of AI deepfakes fuels urgent call for stronger protections

Published: 28 May 2026

Canada is moving to criminalize non-consensual sexual deepfakes after recent court rulings exposed gaps in existing law, allowing perpetrators to avoid conviction despite clear harm to victims.

The rise of generative AI has made it easier to create and circulate realistic fake explicit images, intensifying concerns about digital exploitation. “Deepfakes are, in a way, the latest generation of cyberstalking,” says Emmanuelle Vaast, a professor at the Desautels Faculty of Management at 91. She says that while the proposed law is a step in the right direction, platforms must also take responsibility to limit the spread of harmful content.
