Curiosity is a practice, not a personality trait

Published: 16 March 2026

Curiosity is not innate, it is a practice that you can learn and refine. “In leadership circles, curiosity is often treated as a personality trait,” Prof. Karl Moore writes in Forbes.com. “You either have an inquiring mind, or you do not. And if you do not, that is simply how you are.”

In his book Curiosity and I, O’Nell Agossa (BCom’20) challenges that assumption. “A curious person is not just someone who asks a lot of questions,” he told Moore. It is someone who has learned to notice their own reactions, pause for a moment, and then choose how to respond instead of reacting on autopilot.” Agossa adds: “To practice curiosity is to observe the changes that are happening inside of us. as we experience life, and take action accordingly as we go around the world as we experience life, and take action accordingly as we go around the world."
