In the 1960s\, the families who lived there were uprooted and their homes demolished in the name of urban renewal and integration. Now\, more than t wenty years later\, the site of the community of Africville is a stark\, u nder-utilized park. Former residents\, their descendants and some of the d ecision-makers\, speak out and\, with the help of archival photographs and films\, tell the story of that painful relocation.\n\nAfter the screening Dr. Jafralie will share about Africville today and discuss the impacts on the community and restoration efforts.\n\nAbout Dr. Jafralie\n\nDr. Sabri na Jafralie (She/Her/Elle) is an award-winning bilingual educator and acti vist. She is frequently featured in the media to discuss issues relating t o Black Lives Matter (BLM)\, antiracism\, religion\, ethics and education. She has been interviewed by CBC News\, the Montreal Gazette and CityNews. \n\nBased in Canada\, Dr.Jafralie is fluent in both English and French\, a nd has over 20 years of combined experience as a secondary school teacher in both Canada and the United Kingdom. She is a university lecturer\, dive rsity and equity education specialist\, and has been a guest speaker at in ternational conferences on the subject of religious literacy and ethics.\n \nIn 2001\, Dr. Jafralie obtained her undergraduate degree in education fr om 91ºÚÁÏÍø in Montreal\, Quebec\, Canada. She received her Maste r of Arts in Theological Studies from Concordia University. Subsequently\, she received her Ph.D. in Teacher Education from 91ºÚÁÏÍø in 201 7.\n\nIn 2019\, ByBlacks.com awarded Dr. Jafralie the Activist of the Year Award. In previous years she received the Department of Integrated Studie s in Education (DISE) Outstanding Teaching Award from 91ºÚÁÏÍø\, the Award for Teaching Excellence from the Prime Minister’s Office\, the V era Jamieson Award for Outstanding Dedication in Education from Westmount High School\, in addition to several other academic and community honours. \n\nDr. Jafralie is a leader in teacher education\, racial and religious l iteracy\, and diversity. She is committed to helping citizens by diversify ing curriculums\, policies and training. She focuses on examining religiou s literacy\, racial diversity\, and community building through purposeful dialogue.
